Re-assembled in London in September, 1987. Eno Cale Words

WORDS FOR THE DYING [1991] - music by Brian Eno & John Cale

This is a fascinating documentary about the making of John Cale's Eno-produced album, Words For The Dying. There's a remarkable humour to this film: for example, Eno refuses to be filmed so the crew smuggle hidden cameras into the sound booth - you really feel as if you're eavesdropping on the process that these two artists went through during the recording of the music.

In this TV mini-series, Neil Gaiman and director Dewi Humphreys have crafted an ambitious exploration of "London Below", a vast, subterranean capital far below "London Above", where office drone Richard Mayhew unwittingly finds himself after rescuing Door, an underworld dweller determined to learn why her parents have been killed. Gaiman teases the viewer with hints that Richard may be insane, but Neverwhere maintains its imaginative ambiguity, and presents a dark, dangerous domain of baronies and fiefdoms, bearing familiar British nomenclature but decidedly unfamiliar landmarks. The original soundtrack is by Brian Eno.

Herbie Hancock

POSSIBILITIES [2006] - music by Herbie Hancock

The notion of keyboardist Herbie Hancock working with the likes of Christina Aguilera, John Mayer, and Joss Stone is bound to give jazz purists the willies. But Hancock, like fellow Miles Davis piano alumnus Joe Zawinul, long ago stepped way outside jazz's strict parameters, and with Possibilities, a DVD chronicling the making of his 2005 CD of the same name, his refusal to be pigeonholed has produced some surprising, occasionally extraordinary musical moments. Unlikely partnerships with Brian Eno, Trey Anastasio, and guitarist Jonny Lang (who joins Stone for U2's When Love Comes to Town), as well as Carlos Santana with Angelique Kidjo, yield uneven results but are never less than intriguing.
