GARY PARSONS: BRIAN ENO IN THE 1970S

Overview of ex-Roxy boffin.

It took some doing to stand out within the line-up of one of Britain's most startlingly outre pop acts, but from the moment Roxy Music emerged in 1972, Brian Eno managed it. He would soon prove more than just a not-particularly-pretty face, though, and in this latest instalment of Sonicbond's album-by-album overviews, Gary Parsons takes us through Eno's journey from prog-glam oddball to sonic adventurer and ambient pioneer.

But, frankly, he doesn't do much more. In the absence of original interviews, he relies on quotes from existing books and old music-press interviews, meaning seasoned Roxy watchers won't find anything new here, even if Parsons offers a tidy enough account of Brian Eno's solo projects and other collaborations. A rather dry prose style and well-worn comparisons (Roxy "looked like they had been beamed down from another planet") don't add any further colour to a functional affair whose style is in stark contrast to its maverick subject.
