DAVID BYRNE: RIDE, RISE, ROAR
Engaging documentary of Byrne and dance troupe in rehearsal and on stage.
This film captures a 2008-'09 tour in support of David Byrne and Brian Eno's Everything That Happens Will Happen Today album. Eno, of course, is elsewhere, although he does turn up for a short interview segment. Director David Hillman Curtis also includes extensive, fly-on-the-wall rehearsal footage, with the fifty-eight-year-old but still spry Byrne keeping up with the trio of young dancers who provided the tour's visual novelty. Still a twitchy, compelling frontman, Byrne's under-heralded gift is to make cerebral art-funk a thing of hip-swinging, even self-parodying fun, something exemplified when he dons not the big suit but a fetching tutu to sing a triumphal Burning Down The House.
