BRIAN ENO & THE BALTIC SEA SYMPHONIA
London Royal Festival Hall 30/10/23
An electrifying evening marked the conclusion of Eno's first solo tour, celebrating the remastered The Ship. Standing mid-stage behind a riser, with beard and spectacles, he resembled a shopkeeper at his counter, a motionless point in constantly shifting settings, ensuring that his unique sound-paintings were served up gracefully. He was surrounded by the thirty-piece Baltic Sea Symphonia, conducted by Kristjan Järvi in mesmeric fashion, stalking the boards, facing the audience, getting the massed players to crouch or strut, while The Ship, "an atmosphere with occasional characters drifting through it," was made real. In the encore, after Bonebomb, Eno spoke passionately against atrocities in the Middle East. A powerful, poignant spectacle.
