THE GIFT: ALTAR
Defiantly independent Portuguese stars given an Eno makeover
Veteran Portuguese quartet The Gift crossed paths with Brian Eno by chance six years ago, and friendship eventually led to collaboration, resulting in an inspired collection of sonically inventive, discreetly theatrical pop. Eno's stamp is overt, but Sónia Tavares' resonant voice is the star, dominating the mischievously brisk Clinic Hope, swooning elegantly through the grandeur of Lost And Found, and duetting with the producer on Love Without Violins, whose rubbery synths give way to a euphoric coda. Eno's love of gospel is also indulged on the percussive Malifest, while What If... provides a sumptuous, soothing conclusion.
