Uncut OCTOBER 2009 - by David Stubbs

801: 801 LIVE

Roxy-derived "super group", now with bonus CD.

In 1976, Roxy Music were in the middle of a sabbatical, and Phil Manzanera filled in the time by putting together 801, a sextet including himself, Brian Eno and Bill MacCormick. This album, recorded at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall, points to modest futures that might have happened had punk not done so, the material a compact but psychedelic mix that contains The Beatles (a cover of Tomorrow Never Knows) and This Heat (a cover of Charles Hayward's Rongwrong). Despite being Manzanera's project, much of the material is drawn from Eno's solo work - witness a brutal version of Baby's On Fire.
