BRIAN ENO: 77 MILLION PAINTINGS
Café Rouge (The Hotel Pennsylvania), 145 W 32nd Street, New York City
From his early years as a 1970s glam-rock gadabout to his present reign as an oracular savant on all matters of art, Brian Eno has gamed the conventions of sound and vision. He speaks of music in terms of painting, and he labours with images that become musical for the ways they meander and move - none more thoroughly than the subject of his project 77 Million Paintings. As if under the spell of synesthesia, the piece draws on special software that generates randomised couplings of video-image and sound, all crafted by Mr. Eno. The images are mesmerising and abstract, and the sound is in line with the dreamy "ambient music" that Mr. Eno first conceived in the 1970s. As part of the ongoing Red Bull Music Academy, 77 Million Paintings will be presented in an event space that used to be a restaurant in the Hotel Pennsylvania; admission is available daily (except Mondays) from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., through June 4.
