JON HASSELL - CITIES: WORKS OF FICTION

A re-airing of material originally buried on an expanded reissue of the late trumpeter's 1990 City: Works Of Fiction album.

Actually two LPs, The Living City, a 1989 live performance by the Jon Hassell Group with Brian Eno mixing, and Psychogeography, an update of the City album, re-edited allegedly using Situationist principles (both are available as standalone vinyl releases). Further Fictions sifts Hassell's genre-melding Fourth World signature through then- contemporary hip-hop/sampledelica production techniques, his coruscating shards of processed trumpet a tangy ingredient in a simmering musical bouillabaisse. Typically, The Living City's Ituri finds Hassell's eerily etiolated horn daubs punctuating fragmentary bass licks and pools of electric piano, all of it framed in teeming insect and bird noise more redolent of a tropical rainforest than Manhattan's World Financial Center Winter Garden, where it was captured. Psychogeography contains its share of similarly fractured yet immersive essays alongside exotic percussive workouts like Neon Night (Rain), a sumptuous, ethnomusicological convocation of Sun Ra, Can and electric Miles.
