BRIAN ENO - AMBIENT 1: MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS

Re-released alongside Music For Films, Discreet Music and On Land, the idea for Music For Airports came to Eno - a particularly nervous flyer - as an alternative to the bland departure lounge muzak that only increased his agitation. He applied his fascination of process music produced by systems - which he still pursues to this day via generative software - to four pieces based on tape loops, with subtle keyboard embellishments, that were designed to waft pleasingly and functionally through these impersonal public spaces. Playing 1/1, based on a slow, sparse, meditative Robert Wyatt piano line, feels like a sonic ritual that will freshen up any room. But what remains so fascinating about this supposed background music of negligible emotional input is that Eno also created something moving, engaging and, especially on the multiple female vocal loops of 2/2 and 1/2, of quite exquisite beauty.
