VARIOUS ARTISTS - WHO'S THAT MAN: A TRIBUTE TO CONNY PLANK

Four-disc tribute to the production genius of Krautrock's ursine Kommissar.

Acknowledging the twenty-fifth anniversary of his premature passing, this celebration of Cologne's Konrad 'Conny' Plank serves as a reminder of his prescience and versatility as a mixing-desk innovator. Like Brian Eno, Plank learned (partly from Jamaican dub producers) to use the studio as an instrument, and his spatially opulent yet highly detailed signature on such diverse essays as La Düsseldorf's motorik Silver Cloud, Neu's proto-ambient Leb' Wohl and portentously gothic early Eurythmics' B-side Le Sinistre, gathered here among an eclectic, 2CD trove of Plank-helmed gems and rarities, evinces hands-on creativity way beyond orthodox notions of 'production'. While a disc of contemporary remixes feels somewhat superfluous (and, presumably for rights reasons, Plank's epochal work with Kraftwerk, Harmonia, etc, is absent), CD 4's swansong live set by Plank's Trioformation group, captured in Mexico in 1986, proffers an intriguingly clamorous augury of techno.
